Exercise Physiology for Chronic Pain in Mackay

Living with pain that just won't go away is exhausting. It can affect your sleep, your mood, your work and the things you enjoy. You might have tried rest, medication, scans and hands-on treatment, and still be wondering what's next.

For many people with chronic pain, the right kind of exercise, started gently and progressed at the right pace, is an important part of getting back to living well. We'll work with you to find a way to move that feels manageable, and build from there.

What is chronic pain?

Chronic or persistent pain is pain that lasts longer than three months, or beyond the usual time it takes for tissues to heal. It's common. It might be back or neck pain, joint pain from arthritis, pain after an injury or surgery, or more widespread pain such as fibromyalgia.

With persistent pain, the amount of pain you feel doesn't always reflect how much damage there is. Your nervous system can become more sensitive over time. Understanding this can help take some of the fear out of moving again.

How exercise can help

When something hurts, it's natural to protect it by moving less. Over time, that can lead to stiffness, weaker muscles, lower fitness and less confidence in your body. A well-designed exercise program aims to:

  • gradually build strength and tolerance to movement

  • reduce stiffness and improve how you move

  • help you understand your pain, so movement feels less scary

  • give you tools to manage flare-ups

  • improve sleep, energy and mood.

Our Approach

Where we can see you

In our clinic, in the pool, at home or at your gym. Hydrotherapy can be a great starting point if land-based exercise is too painful. Once you're confident, our small group sessions are a cost-effective way to keep progressing.

In small groups → A supportive, social way to keep building strength and balance.

In the pool → Hydrotherapy is a great place to start balance work if you're nervous.

Funding

No referral is needed. Chronic pain is often eligible for a Medicare rebate with a GP chronic condition management plan. NDIS (self-managed and plan-managed), WorkCover and third-party insurance claims are accepted, and private health can be claimed on the spot.
